This edition of Suleiman Charitra, originally written in Sanskrit by Kalyana Malla, is the marvelous, first-ever English translation of the classic, retelling the biblical tale in classic Sanskrit.
A Hindu poet, Kalyana Malla, renders in Sanskrit a story for his Muslim patron, a Lodhi prince of the sixteenth century, in this unique blend of culture and traditions. The sensual unfurling of David and Bathsheba's love story, David's infatuation, the bathing scene, his pursuit of Bathsheba and ultimately their union are strikingly described in the shringara rasa or the erotic mode, by a writer who is famous for the sex manual, Ananga Ranga. The book is also a delightful Sanskrit rendering of Hebraic and Arabic tales, elegantly bringing together the elements of the east and the west.
About Kalyana Malla
Kalyana Malla was a renowned poet at the court of the Lodhi prince Lad Khan in eastern Uttar Pradesh. He belonged to the early sixteenth century. His works describe him as a royal descendant of the Karpura warrior clan of the lunar line. His father, Gaja Malla and grandfather, Trailokya Chandra, are known as revered rulers and military commanders of their times. Kalyana Malla is known to have composed two great works for his princely patron - the celebrated sex manual, Ananga Ranga, and the other is this title, drawn from Islamic and Biblical stories.
