Twelve Years A Slave is the best-selling autobiography of a black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in a pre-Civil War United States.

Solomon Northrup was born a free man. A free black man in a United States that had yet to face the Civil War for equal rights. His idyllic life as a loving husband and father of three is cut short as a business trip turns into a heart-wrenching nightmare rooted in the ugliest side of America's past. Kidnapped and sold into slavery, Solomon's life becomes an example of the worst episode in American slavery. Abused physically and mentally over a period of twelve years, Solomon describes the slave markets in Washington D.C. and cotton cultivation on major plantations in Louisiana. This true story of a man who struggled against a nightmare for twelve years before the American Civil War was adapted into a hit movie in 2013.
